Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine…be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever!

Ephesians 3:20-21

These are exciting days in the life of St. Matthews Baptist Church!

I want to take a few minutes of your time to share some very important news with you.

I’m sure you will agree with me that the ministries of our church are a blessing, not only to members and regular attenders, but also to the community.  I wish you could be with me to hear the compliments people direct toward our church.  We are gaining a reputation for being a church that genuinely cares about our community and is actively involved in making this a better place to live, work, and play.

For nearly 90 years, SMBC has faithfully sought to be the presence of Christ in our neighborhood, city, and region.  With God’s help we have overcome significant challenges throughout our history.  Our faith has grown and our confidence in God has increased.

Over the last two years, our Master Planning process has led us to prayerfully seek God’s direction for our future.  We have collectively shared new dreams we believe will help us live into our vision that “St Matthews Baptist Church will be a vibrant faith community, demonstrating the love of Christ, becoming vital to the life and hope of our city.”

To accomplish this vision, we need to not only sharpen our ministry focus, but also give attention to our facilities.  God has blessed us with a wonderful campus, and we want to be good stewards.  Our Master Plan Committee shared with us significant maintenance needs along with a plan for refreshing our campus.  Thanks to your generosity, we have already been able to invest more than $700,000 in replacing the lighting system and roof of our sanctuary.  We have realized that we will not be able to finish the plan through our regular budget offering.

Recently, our church voted overwhelmingly to embark on a three-year stewardship emphasis that will help us shape our ministry for the next generation.  REIMAGINE is the name we have chosen for this effort.  Over the next few months we will ask every family in our church to prayerfully consider making a sacrificial commitment (above and beyond our ongoing tithes and offerings) to  be given over the next three years.  I am not asking you to make that decision today.  I’m simply asking you to begin praying about it.  Would you say to God, “I believe you have a future for St. Matthews Baptist Church.  I want to help my church take the next step in the directions you are leading.  God, please show me what to do in regard to the Reimagine effort.”  If you will do that, I believe God will speak to you about your participation in this campaign.

Please read the enclosed materials regarding REIMAGINE, and then plan to join us in worship the morning of January 31 for a special service celebrating God’s work among us.  We will be reminded why Reimagine is so important, and following the service, you will have an opportunity to find answers to questions you might have.  Please know that you will not be asked to make a commitment that day.

This is a great opportunity for us.  We look back with gratitude at those who sacrificed so we might enjoy the ministries of St. Matthews Baptist Church today.  Fifty years from now, a group of people will look back on this time and be thankful we seized this moment and Reimagined what God could do through us.

Looking Forward With Anticipation,

Greg
